The PRESSING SOLUTIONS Aerosol Piercing Unit was awarded a Green Apple Award for Good Environmental Practice Technology presented at the House of Commons on 4 th November 2004 by the Trade and Industry Minister, Patricia Hewitt. This was also featured on Midlands Today (11th February 2005) by David Gregory.

Shropshire-based company Pressing Solutions Environmental Ltd in conjunction with Advantage West Midlands Innovation Networks Innovation scheme, has developed an Aerosol Piercing and Filtration Unit which pierces and de-gasses empty aerosols, contains and filters the propellant. The unit is manufactured in the UK using quality stainless steel for long life and robustness.

Constructed of stainless steel with brass piercer, the handle is depressed to pierce the aerosol and the propellant is directed into the bottom chamber passing through carbon packs of varying sizes to extract as much as possible before being allowed into the atmosphere. To aid the movement a small air flow is introduced with the pump being sited away from the piercing unit or it can be connected to own air supply <.5 bar. Earthing information is included in the Manual.

This method of processing aerosols makes the aerosol safer to store and where the contents air dry renders the aerosol non-hazardous in most cases. The dry aerosol can then be added to existing metal collections and can be recycled thereby boosting the raw materials so badly needed by our steel and aluminium industry. Some products such as petroleum based liquids, glue, foam fillers etc. are not suitable for this process and care should be taken to ensure that these are taken out of the system and dealt with separately. Although this is designed specifically for the one at a time operation for aerosols up to 750ml, since most aerosols are used up one at a time it was felt that this was a starting point. The unit can be bench mounted or can be supplied mounted on its own collecting bin for easy storage.

The original prototype was tested by NPL at Teddington and based on their report, modifications were undertaken and the first production run took place in September 2004 Enquiries and sales since then have risen into many areas of industry – changing Hazardous Waste into Non-Hazardous waste and giving immediate savings in disposal costs.

Following the success of the APU we now have the UK Agency for Aerosolv which evacuates the aerosol and filters the propellant and is based on a 240 litre standard metal drum. This answers the problem of full/part-full cans needing emptying prior to piercing and filtration and is selling extremely well.

Future Developments:

A new multi-unit for dealing with aerosols by the bucket-load is being developed and is now in prototype formate which gives a quicker throughput but employs the same extraction and filtration technology. The gas may be Carbon Filtered or be returned to LPG.Enquiries to date for this are from landfill site operators and aerosol  filling companies.

All enquiries are dealt with on a personal basis to ensure the right type of machinery is provided for the individual situation.

A return to base annual service is offered whereby the machine is cleaned, checked for correct working and the carbon filters are replaced.
